Gransdens LTC - Junior Section

Welcome to the Gransdens Lawn Tennis Club junior section. The Junior ladder is a mini tournament in a ladder format. There are 4 players in each ladder and you play the other 3 players in your section. At the end of the term, it will get re-evaluated and players will be moved up and down depending on their performances. Thankyou very much to everyone who participated in the ladder and we hope you enjoyed the competition. Well done to all those who managed to play their matches despite the bad weather. If you want to be added to the ladder then please speak to either Jan Foster or Chris Johnson. Please come back to see when the ladder will be running again. The results of all the matches are given in the Newsletter below.

JUNIOR NEWSLETTER – AUTUMN 2009

WELCOME to the new season, with lots of tennis ahead of us all………….

COACHING SUMMER 2010 Coaching sessions are available for all age groups from tots to teenagers, and will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays. Details and application form will be circulated to all junior members shortly. In the meantime if you have any questions please contact Adrian on 07760 160366.

JUNIOR CLUB SESSIONS Congratulations to you hardy players who’ve been coming along to junior club play throughout the winter! It’s been great to see such enthusiasm (and improvement).

Sessions will continue for junior club members on Saturdays at 11.00 for children aged 5 toapprox. 8 years, 12.00 for those aged approx.8 to 11 years (a parent needs to accompany for both of these groups).

Friday nights are Teen Nights with the courts reserved for those aged 11 and over both before andafter your coaching sessions, 5.30 onwards. We’re delighted to have a growing group of girls and hope they will make good use of this court time too. These sessions are vital for practising your tennis between coaching sessions.

TEAMS We have entered five teams in the AEGON League this year, Mini-Red (mixed) and U12, U14, U16 and U18 boys. Fixtures include a mixture of singles/ doubles play, and are against other Cambridgeshire clubs.

Adult team captains for these teams (many thanks to all) are:

18U (boys) Nicola Hipwell

16U (boys) Julie Kean

14U (boys) Becky Harris

12U (boys) Sarah Burles

8U (Mini Red) Trevor Peer

Unfortunately, we did not have enough available players on the proposed dates to put in Mini Orange and Mini Green teams this year, but players in these age groups can still play in other tournaments to gain points for their rankings, or just to have fun, and tournament details will be circulated by e-mail, and can also be found on the LTA website.

In addition to the AEGON league, the LTA are again organising the Cambs JuniorLeague (mixed – hurray, girls!) for club players aged U16 and U13, specifically for clubs like ours, and we’re hoping to enter at least one team in each age group. Fixtures for this league will run through June and July after the AEGON League is completed so there is plenty of opportunity to represent the Gransdens in competitive team matches. If you’re interested in joining our teams please come along to our junior club sessions on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings (see Club Sessions – above) or contact the team captains.

BRITISH TENNIS MEMBERSHIP All juniors playing for the club must be registered members of British Tennis, so please follow the link below to join. Membership is free until 2012. You will be given an individual player rating and membership number. www.lta.org.uk/BritishTennisMembership

TOURNAMENTS

This season again our Junior Tournament will be part of the Club’s tournament week (which starts on Monday 6 th September) and will take place on Saturday 11 th September. Categories are 8 and under, 12 and under, 16 and under. The final for each age group will be played on the Club Finals Day on Sunday 19 th September. Make sure you put both of those dates in your diary.

Following the success of last year’s Family Cup, in which the child age limit was restricted, it was decided to continue with the same format. The competition will be open to players aged 12 and under, playing with a parent. The event will take place during the Saturday sessions later in the year (date to be confirmed).

Our Junior American Doubles Tournament will be held later in the season, date to be confirmed. This is an enjoyable tournament offering a chance to play with several different partners against a variety of different opponents. Players aged 11 and over may enter this event.

There is a long list of local tournaments and competitions for you to play in, and the programme for this year is on display in the Clubhouse. We are also hosting a number of tournaments here at the Gransdens this season, and it would be great to have our own players taking part in these:

Please add your name to the board in the Clubhouse if you’d like to enter any of these.

ROAD TO WIMBLEDON – UNDER 14 This year the matches will be played over a period of 6 weeks rather than on one day only. This event is for boys aged 14 or under (1996 or later). It is a singles competition, the winner and runner- up proceeding to the next regional round, with the possibility of eventually playing in the finals at the All England Tennis Club at Wimbledon in August. Laurence Kean was our winner last year, and although losing narrowly in the county final had a fantastic day at Wimbledon in August (see photo of Laurence with Tim Henman in the clubhouse). If you are interested in participating please sign up on the entry sheet at the clubhouse as soon as possible. The draw will be made before the Easter holidays to give you all a chance to get some matches played while you’re off school.

See you on court!
